Baldness : Introduction , Symptoms , Causes , Prevention

Overview

If your hairline is receding or your crown is thinning, you'll
wonder why this is often happening and what exactly is causing your thinning hair. you'll even be wondering what, if anything, you'll do to reverse this trend.

What causes baldness in men?

The overwhelming majority
of men who go bald do so due to a genetic disease referred to as androgenetic alopecia, more commonly referred to as male pattern baldness.

According to the American Hair Loss Association, 95 percent of hair loss in men is caused by androgenetic alopecia.

This inherited trait that tends to offer
guys a receding hairline and a thinning crown is caused by genetic sensitivity to a byproduct of testosterone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

How exactly does this hormonal byproduct cause hair loss?

Well, hair follicles that are sensitive to DHT have a bent
to shrink over time. because the affected hair follicles get smaller, the lifetime of every hair becomes shorter. Eventually, the affected follicles stop producing hair, or a minimum of the sort of hair you’re wont to .

With male pattern baldness, hair loss typically follows a predictable pattern. the 2
commonest patterns of hair loss include the following:

Ø        Hair starts to thin on top of the top and round the temples. This pattern may eventually leave a “horseshoe” of hair round the sides and back of the top.

Ø        Hair starts to recede from the front of the hairline, pushing the hairline further back on the top.

The degree and progression of balding in men is assessed by the Norwood arrangement
. it's seven stages that measure the severity and pattern of hair loss and balding.

Medications which will
cause hair loss

Hair loss from certain medications is typically
temporary and once you stop taking the medication, hair growth will likely resume. a number of the known drugs related to hair loss include:

Ø  Chemotherapy drugs

Ø  Acne medications like isotretinoin (Accutane)

Ø  Antifungal drugs, especially voriconazole

Ø  Anticoagulants like heparin and warfarin

Ø  Immunosuppressants

Ø  Blood pressure medications like beta blockers and ACE inhibitors

Ø  Cholesterol-lowering drugs like simvastatin (Zocor) and atorvastatin (Lipitor)

Ø  Antidepressants like sertraline (Zoloft) and fluoxetine (Prozac)

Can baldness be prevented?

Male pattern baldness is usually
an inherited condition. It’s very difficult to nonsurgically reverse any of the hair loss that’s seen with this condition.

However, preventing further hair loss at the primary sign of thinning is feasible . Finasteride and Rogaine are two known treatments which may prevent further hair loss seen with androgenetic alopecia.

Once you discontinue use of those
medications, the hair loss may resume. ask your doctor about if these medications could also be right for you.

To keep your hair healthy and to stop
hair loss from other causes, try the following:

Ø     Try doing regular scalp massages, which can help stimulate hair growth.

Ø     Quit smoking. Older researchTrusted Source suggests that smoking could also be related to hair loss.

Ø     Manage stress through exercise, mediation, or deep breathing exercises.

Ø     Eat a well-balanced diet rich in protein, iron, and vitamins.

Ø     Switch medication. If you think that your medication could also be causing hair loss, talk together with your doctor about other options which will work better for you.
