Oppositional Defiant Disorder : Introduction , Risk , Sign and Symptoms , Treatment

Overview


Even the best-behaved children are often 
difficult and challenging sometimes. But if your child or teenager features a frequent and protracted pattern of anger, irritability, arguing, defiance or vindictiveness toward you and other authority figures, he or she may have oppositional defiant disorder (ODD).


As a parent, you do not 
need to go it alone in trying to manage a toddler with ODD. Doctors, psychological state professionals and child development experts can help.


Behavioral treatment of strange 
involves learning skills to assist build positive family interactions and to manage problematic behaviors. Additional therapy, and possibly medications, could also be needed to treat related psychological state disorders.

 


When to ascertain 
a doctor


Your child isn't likely to ascertain 
his or her behavior as a drag . Instead, he or she is going to probably complain about unreasonable demands or blame others for problems. If your child shows signs which will indicate ODD or other disruptive behavior, or you're concerned about your ability to parent a challenging child, seek help from a toddler psychologist or a toddler psychiatrist expertly in disruptive behavior problems.

Causes


There's no known clear explanation for 
oppositional defiant disorder. Contributing causes could also be a mixture of inherited and environmental factors, including:

 

Ø     Genetics — a child's natural disposition or temperament and possibly neurobiological differences within the way nerves and therefore the brain function

Ø     Environment — problems with parenting which will involve a scarcity of supervision, inconsistent or harsh discipline, or abuse or neglect.

 


Risk factors


Oppositional defiant disorder may be a 
complex problem. Possible risk factors for ODD include:

 

Ø     Temperament — a toddler who features a temperament that has difficulty regulating emotions, like being highly emotionally reactive to situations or having trouble tolerating frustration

Ø     Parenting issues — a toddler who experiences abuse or neglect, harsh or inconsistent discipline, or a scarcity of parental supervision

Ø     Other family issues — a toddler who lives with parent or family discord or features a parent with a psychological state or substance use disorder

Ø     Environment — oppositional and defiant behaviors are often strengthened and reinforced through attention from peers and inconsistent discipline from other authority figures, like teachers

 


Complications


Children and teenagers with oppositional defiant disorder may have trouble reception 
with parents and siblings, in class with teachers, and at work with supervisors and other authority figures. Children with ODD may struggle to form and keep friends and relationships.


ODD may cause 
problems such as:

 

Ø  Poor school and work performance

Ø  Antisocial behavior

Ø  Impulse control problems

Ø  Substance use disorder

Ø  Suicide


Many children and teenagers 
with ODD even have other psychological state disorders, such as:

 

Ø  Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

Ø  Conduct disorder

Ø  Depression

Ø  Anxiety

Ø  Learning and communication disorders

 


Prevention


There are no guaranteed thanks to prevent oppositional defiant disorder. However, positive parenting and early treatment can help improve behavior and stop 
things from getting worse. The sooner that ODD are often managed, the higher.


Treatment can help restore your child's self-esteem and rebuild a positive relationship between you and your child. Your child's relationships with other important adults in his or her life — like 
teachers and care providers — also will enjoy early treatment.
